BA (undergraduate level)

The undergraduate curriculum centers the study of music as historical, cultural, emotional, national, political, religious, cognitive and aesthetic expressions. A variety of courses are offered in this spirit; they include core classes such as the history of Western music (from ancient Greece through the twenty-first century), musical anthropology, Jewish musics(s), music theories in cultural historical contexts, music cognition, music and politics, and more. MA (graduate level)

The graudate level in the department offers in two tracks: art music, and ethnomusicology. At the core of the first track is the historical development of Western art music and its relation to the history of culture and society. The main subfields studies in this track are historical musicology, music theory,and other aesthetic, cultural, and cognitive methodologies. In the field of ethnomusicology and music of the Jews, emphasis is placed on ethnographical research methods of oral musical traditions, while focusing onmusics from the Middle East and North Africa. The research track at the graduate level requires the writing of a thesis and is designed for students who wish to pursue further research at the doctorate level. Both the undergraduate and graduate tracks can be combined with as additional major at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance (performance, compositions, conducting, etc.).
